Introduction

The goal of this unit is to cultivate perfect sound control at the keyboard through one of the most fundamental movements of piano technique: the drop.

One of the most common technical deficiencies at the piano is the inability to get a true controlled sound quality. In many ways, a pianist's control of sound is the mark of true musicianship.

Learning to control sound involves many "non-physical" aspects, such as a well trained ear, a good inner concept of sound, and so on. But at a physical level, it involves an intimate connection with the feel of the key descent - the movement of the piano key from top to bottom - and an understanding how that relates to the sound you want to achieve.

The exercises in this unit will help you gain an understanding of the different aspects of key descent, a greater degree of dynamic control, and a fine-tuned approach to the "drop" movement.
